The IIHF World Hockey Championship MVP and second overall draft pick will skate on a line with Nic Petan and Joel Armia when the Jets take on the Edmonton Oilers tonight.
Though it will be a special night, Laine doesn't want to try and force anything that isn't there for the sake of making a highlight reel.
"I know that everybody's expecting me to do something magical, but I just want to play my game and play the team's game," said Laine. "I just want to give the best (effort) I can, every shift.
"I know that that's enough for me and my teammates, so I don't have to worry about what other people are expecting. I was just want to give it my best shot."
The 21-year-old Petan will skate in his second game of the pre-season. He had three shots and led all forwards in ice time (19:49) in Tuesday's loss to Calgary.
He looks forward to playing alongside Laine, but doesn't want to change the style of play that got him into 26 NHL games last season.
"It's going to be interesting. It looks like he communicates quite well. We talked a little bit out there this morning," Petan said. "I'm going to go in playing the same way I always do. If I have a shot, I'll take it. I've always had a good pass mentality first, but I don't think my game changes tonight."
