Kunitz, Perry score in third period, lift Ducks to win over Sabres @NHLdotcom

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Chris Kunitz and Corey Perry scored third-period goals and the Anaheim Ducks held off the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 on Monday night.

Kunitz scored on a power play early in the period and Perry gave the Ducks a two-goal lead on another man-advantage midway through the third. Chris Pronger also scored for Anaheim.

Buffalo pulled within one when defenseman Craig Rivet scored with 6:33 remaining, but Anaheim's defense and goalie Jonas Hiller shut the Sabres out the rest of the way.

Hiller, making his fourth consecutive start in place of Jean-Sebastien Giguere, had 21 saves to win for the third time in that stretch. He's also started six of the past seven and is 4-2 in those games.

Teemu Selanne and Steve Montador each had two assists for the Ducks, and Paul Gaustad assisted on both of Buffalo's goals.

Perry's goal turned out to be the difference. Buffalo's Patrick Lalime slowed a shot, but the puck got past him and was sitting behind him in the crease. Perry then reached around and tapped it in for his 17th goal.

Rivet knocked in a rebound for his first goal of the season.

Andrew Ebbett and Kunitz combined on a bang-bang play early in the third period to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead while Rivet was serving a slashing penalty. Ebbett controlled the puck directly behind the Buffalo goal, then snapped a pass to Kunitz, bearing down on Lalime from the right side. Kunitz slid the puck between the goalie's pads for his 14th goal.

Pronger had drawn the Ducks even at 1-1 with his one-timer from just inside the blue line at 12:43 of the second. Pronger had just gotten off a similar shot that was blocked by a defender in front of him, and the puck bounced to Montador. He snapped a pass across to Pronger and he knocked it in for his ninth goal of the season.

Lalime, screened by the Ducks' Todd Marchant, didn't have a chance to stop the shot. Lalime faced 37 shots.

Although there were no power plays until the Sabres' Mike Weber was sent off for roughing at 16:58 of the second period, the Ducks looked as if they were on a power play most of that period, outshooting Buffalo 20-6.

Patrick Kaleta got a scrambling goal to open the scoring 13:17 in. With the puck in the crease, Kaleta stumbled by was able to sweep it past Hiller. The goal was Kaleta's third.

Notes: The Ducks were 2-for-3 with the man advantage. ... Anaheim C Samuel Pahlsson missed the game with flulike symptoms. ... The Sabres just recalled Weber from AHL Portland. Buffalo is missing four regular defensemen, including Jaroslav Spacek, who hurt his hip in a 2-0 win at Phoenix on Saturday. ... Rivet's goal ended a 65-game drought dating back to Jan. 12, 2008, when he scored for the San Jose Sharks against Toronto's Vesa Toskala. Rivet has 46 goals in 777 NHL regular-season games.
