Koper, Wahl score early, Chiefs hold on to beat Giants 2-1

SPOKANE, Wash. - Levko Koper and Mitch Wahl scored early goals Saturday and the Spokane Chiefs held on for their fourth Western Hockey League win in a row, 2-1 over the Vancouver Giants.

Koper gave the Chiefs (10-6-1) a 1-0 lead with just 49 seconds left in the first period when he broke in all alone on Vancouver goalie Jamie Tucker and wristed home scored his 10th goal of the season.

Wahl scored the eventual game winner at 10:31 of the second when Kyle Beach flipped a puck over the Vancouver defence to the Chiefs leading scorer. Wahl's shot from the top of the right circle deflected off a Vancouver defenceman and past Tucker.

Brendan Gallagher scored Vancouver's only goal of the game at 15:21 of the second on a power play.

Spokane outshot the Giants 26-25, the 12th straight time they have outshot their opponent. James Reid won his eighth game of the season with 25 saves. Tucker ended up with 23 saves for Vancouver (12-6-3).

The Chiefs have given up just three goals in their longest winning streak of the season and have killed off 25 of 27 penalties.
