Kootenay eliminates Medicine Hat with 3-1 victory in game five @NHLdotcom

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. - The Kootenay Ice eliminated the defending Western Hockey League champion Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night with a 3-1 victory in Game five of their Eastern Conference quarter-final at Medicine Hat.

The Ice win the best-of-seven series 4-1 and will wait for their second round opponent to be determined.

On Friday, Ice forward Dustin Sylvester opened the scoring for Kootenay with a short-handed breakaway goal at the 2:21 mark. A goal by teammate Tylan Stephens gave the Ice a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Tiger winger Sean Ringrose scored at 4:55 of the third to set up an entertaining finish.

With Tiger goaltender Ryan Holfeld on the bench for an extra attacker, Kootenay's Arnaud Jacquemet scored an empty-net goal to secure the win.

Holfeld saved 29 of the 31 shots he faced. Kris Lazaruk turned aside 34 shots in goal for the Ice.
