Key for Jets will be turning early goals into wins

by John Kreiser
Advantage Margin: +4
Playing in Atlanta, there wasn't much to choose from -- at home, the Thrashers had three more power plays than they allowed; they were plus-1 on the road.

Special Teams Goal Margin: -15
The penalty-killers were slightly below average at home (81.3 percent), but only Edmonton had more trouble killing penalties on the road (74.0 percent). Also, allowing 10 shorthanded goals didn't help.

Goals by defensemen: 44
Former coach Craig Ramsay's decision to move Dustin Byfuglien full-time to the blue line paid of -- the former Blackhawk led all NHL defensemen with 20 goals. Underrated Tobias Enstrom added 10.

Category Rank (Conference)
2010-11 Points 80 (12th East/25th NHL)
Change from 2009-10 -3
Home Points 41 (12th East/24th NHL)
Road Points 39 (11th East/23rd NHL)
Overtime Record
Total: 15-5-7 OT: 10-5 SO: 5-7
The Thrashers tied for the League lead in overtime victories, winning five times at home and five on the road. They left Atlanta with a 21-13 home record in shootouts, compared with just 16-16 on the road.

Times Scored First: 45
Record: 22-14-9
Maybe the Jets will do better at turning early leads into wins. The Thrashers scored first in more than half their games, but lost more times when scoring first than any team in the League.

Best 2010-11 Number: 15
Wins by the Thrashers/Jets in games decided after regulation, tied for the most in the NHL. Of course, that was helped by the fact that they led the League with 27 games that were tied after 60 minutes.

Worst 2010-11 Number: 14
Points by the Thrashers/Jets against the Western Conference, tying them with Ottawa for the fewest in the East. They were 28-26-10 against the East, but just 6-10-2 against Western teams.
NHL hockey returns to Winnipeg on Oct. 9, when the Canadiens come to the MTS Centre. Because they're playing in the Southeast Division this season, the Jets will have three trips each to Washington, Carolina and the two Florida teams. They face an early seven-game trip, but have 12 of 14 games in December at home.
