Kelowna scores five in second period to eliminate Tri-City in WHL semifinal @NHLdotcom

KELOWNA - A five-goal second period by Kelowna helped the Rockets eliminate the Tri-City Americans 6-2 in the WHL Western Conference playoff semifinal Sunday.

Mikael Backlund scored twice and added an assist as the Rockets' offence exploded in the second period with 20 shots on the Americans. Kelowna, which won the series 4-2, will face either the Vancouver Giants or the Spokane Chiefs in the conference final.

Curt Gogol, Evan Bloodoff and Jamie Benn also scored for the Rockets. Benn currently leads the WHL in playoff scoring with seven goals and 16 assists.

Taylor Procyshen and Brooks Macek scored for Tri-City.

Rockets goaltender Mark Guggenberger made 12 shots for the win, while at the other end Chet Pickard and Brett Martyniuk combined for 28 saves.
