The Slovakian Ice Hockey Association announced on Thursday its preliminary 35-man roster of players who will be competing for spots on the National Team that will participate in the 2012 World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Calgary later this month.
Slovakia head coach Ernest Bokros will have six returning players in the mix, including goalie Dominik Riecicky of Orange SVK, defensemen Peter Ceresnak of the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League, Martin Marincin of the Prince George Cougars in the Western Hockey League and Peter Trska of Orange SVK, and forwards Tomas Jurco of the Saint John Sea Dogs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Tomas Matousek of Orange SVK.
Slovakia's camp will take place in Three Hills, Alta., beginning Dec. 17. The club has a pair of tune-up games prior to the start of the tournament on Dec. 26 in Calgary. The Slovaks will meet Finland on Dec. 21 in Winsport and the U.S. National Team on Dec. 23 in Three Hills. Slovakia, which finished a disappointing eighth at the 2011 WJC in Buffalo, will compete in Group A with Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and Latvia. Group B consists of Canada, Team USA, Finland, Czech Republic and Denmark.
There are six players invited to camp who have already been drafted by an NHL team, including defensemen Ceresnak (NY Rangers, 2011), Martin Gernat (Edmonton, 2011), Marcincin (Edmonton, 2011) and Adam Janosik (Tampa Bay, 2010) and future Detroit forwards Jurco and Marek Tvrdon, who were both drafted last June. Jurco, a member of the 2011 Memorial Cup champion Sea Dogs, was chosen in the second round (No. 35) by the Red Wings.
According to NHL Central Scouting, the top Slovak skater on the roster eligible for the 2012 Draft is defenseman Patrik Luza, who is rated No. 1 among his countryman. Richard Sabol, meanwhile, is the top-rated Slovakian goalie eligible for the 2012 Draft on the roster.
