Fantasy team power rankings for June 2018

Blue Jackets trending up with young core, solidified top line; Barkov, Yandle should help Panthers bounce back

by Rob Reese @NHLReese / NHL.com Fantasy Editor

NHL.com will update fantasy team power rankings based on number of players in the top 250 overall, top 75, placement of highest-ranked goalie among top 30 (if applicable) and power-play percentage from most recent season. Any ties will be broken by other trends based on the writer's discretion.

Fantasy owners should use these rankings as a basis for team evaluation, keeper decisions and offseason draft research. These rankings will be updated throughout the offseason after the 2018 NHL Draft, free agency, trades, injury updates, prospect news, fantasy mock drafts and other developments.

OFFSEASON TRENDS:

-- The Columbus Blue Jackets have yet to win a Stanley Cup Playoff series since they entered the NHL in 2000-01. They lost to the Washington Capitals in six games this postseason but have a positive outlook in the fantasy landscape for next season. Blue Jackets center Pierre-Luc Dubois made an immediate impact as a rookie with 48 points (20 goals, 28 assists) in 82 regular-season games. He looks to have solidified himself as their No. 1 center and has a high ceiling playing with elite left wing Artemi Panarin and right wing Cam Atkinson.

Top defenseman Seth Jones will also be highly sought after in fantasy drafts. Jones led all skaters with 30:37 per game in the playoffs and looks to build on his NHL career-best 57 points (16 goals, 41 assists) in 78 regular-season games. Defenseman Zach Werenski had an NHL career-high 16 goals in 77 games and is 20th overall in NHL.com's latest fantasy defenseman rankings. Their goaltending should remain one of the strongest in the NHL with Sergei Bobrovsky (potential 2019 unrestricted free agent) having at least 37 wins and five shutouts in each of the past two seasons.

-- Led by top-line center Aleksander Barkov, who broke out for 78 points (27 goals, 51 assists), the Florida Panthers have one of the most promising young cores in the NHL. Despite missing the playoffs in 2017-18, the Panthers should be a playoff contender and are a team worth targeting in fantasy drafts. The Panthers forward group is loaded with skilled players in Barkov (finished 51st in Yahoo), Vincent Trocheck (23rd), Jonathan Huberdeau (80th), Evgenii Dadonov (92nd) and now Mike Hoffman (103rd), who was acquired after being traded twice June 19.

Florida also has two forward prospects, Henrik Borgstrom and Owen Tippett, that could be fantasy-relevant next season. The Panthers defensive depth includes three fantasy draft targets in Keith Yandle (105th in Yahoo), Aaron Ekblad (110th) and Mike Matheson (253rd). Goaltending is Florida's big question mark from a fantasy standpoint. If Roberto Luongo, 39, can play a full season as their starter, he will have significant fantasy value. But given Luongo's recent injury history, James Reimer is worth a flier in late rounds.
