Jordan Martinook leads Coyotes past Avalanche

DENVER -- Jordan Martinook scored two goals, Max Domi had a goal and two assists, and Tony DeAngelo scored in his NHL debut to help the Arizona Coyotes to a 4-2 win against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center on Tuesday.
"Everyone knew we needed to come out and have a workmanlike effort," said Martinook, who had gone five games without a point. "To a man, everybody carried their weight and came out and played hard and did all the little things right. Guys were playing physical, were trying to play below their dots and that kind of wore them down."
Martinook scored his second of the game 11 seconds into the third period on a power play to give the Coyotes (5-7-0) a 4-2 lead. Martinook scored from the left slot off a pass from Radim Vrbata for his fifth goal of the season. Domi avoided a check by Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson at center ice shortly after a faceoff and got the puck to Vrbata, who passed across to Martinook in the left circle.

"Max made an unbelievable play to get it by [Johnson], and being able to go in 2-on-1 with [Vrbata] and him making a perfect pass," Martinook said. "Putting that one in, it definitely deflates them."
The Coyotes took a 3-2 lead late in the second period on goals by DeAngelo and Domi 1:11 apart.
DeAngelo, who was recalled from Tucson of the American Hockey League on Monday, scored from the right circle off a pass from Domi at 16:15.
"That was a great play by [Domi]," DeAngelo said. "I tried to stay in the slot area and it was a great pass and I just tried to put it in."

Domi put Arizona ahead at 17:26 of the second when his shot hit the shaft of Johnson's stick and sailed by the glove of screened goalie Calvin Pickard, who made 21 saves.
"That's hockey," said Pickard, who won his three previous starts. "There's going to be bounces that go your way and some that go like that. I'm a firm believer in that it works both ways and that you earn your bounces."
The Avalanche (5-7-0) had taken a 2-1 lead earlier in the second period on goals by Nathan MacKinnon and Rene Bourque.
Bourque deflected Johnson's shot behind Coyotes goalie Louis Domingue, who had 25 saves, 38 seconds into the period on a power play. MacKinnon scored his first in 11 games and second overall at 6:09 to break a 1-1 tie.
"It's tough; they get two quick ones at the end of the period," MacKinnon said. "Our third had to be way better than that. We have to push harder and be better for sure."
Martinook gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead 28 seconds into the first period on an odd-man rush after Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie's shot was blocked inside Arizona's blue line.

Goal of the game

Domi had the puck on the left side and drew Pickard to him, then skated behind the net and passed to DeAngelo in the right faceoff circle. Pickard wasn't fully set by the time DeAngelo shot for his first NHL goal to tie the game 2-2.

Saves of the game

Domingue stopped Rene Bourque skating down the middle at 7:30 of the first period and made a glove save against Nikita Zadorov from the point 10 seconds later. He robbed Cody McLeod, who had a clean breakaway after exiting the penalty box, at 17:10 to preserve the Coyotes' 1-0 lead.

Highlight of the game

Colorado took a 2-1 lead in the second period when Matt Duchene stole the puck from Arizona's Tyler Gaudet at the Coyotes blue line. He passed to MacKinnon, who moved above the left hash marks and beat Domingue to the far post.

Unsung moment of the game

The Avalanche had a 2-1 lead in the second period when defenseman Francois Beauchemin took a shot from the right point that got by a screened Domingue and bounced off the left post at 14:30. The Coyotes scored the next three goals.

Need to know

The Avalanche had a moment of silence and video tribute for former forward Marek Svatos, who passed away last weekend at age 34. Svatos had 96 goals and 68 assists in 316 games with Colorado from 2004-10. ... The Coyotes were 1-for-25 on power plays in a 10-game stretch before Martinook's third-period goal.
