The Condors were two men short, and San Diego had a 6-on-3 advantage after pulling goalie Dustin Tokarski. Gustavsson redirected a pass through the goal mouth, then was credited with the goal as the last Bakersfield player to touch the puck before an errant Gulls pass went into the San Diego net at 16:56 of the third.
"That's awesome," Bakersfield forward Braden Christoffer said of Gustavsson's goal in a video posted on the Condors' YouTube page. "I love that."
It was the first goal of Gustavsson's pro career. He became the 12th goalie to score in the AHL's 81-year history and the first since Reto Berra of Lake Erie did it against Chicago on Jan. 16, 2015.
Gustavsson also did his regular job well, making 30 saves for the Edmonton Oilers' AHL affiliate. The 32-year-old, who has played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins, is 1-3-1 in seven games (five starts) for the Oilers this season.
