OTTAWA - John Tavares and Dale Mitchell scored in a 2:32 span of the first period Thursday night and the Oshawa Generals went on to beat the Ottawa 67's 4-1, completing a sweep of their best-of-seven first-round Ontario Hockey League playoff series.

Ryan McGinnis, with a power-play goal, and Kory Nagy also scored for Oshawa, which chased 67's starting goaltender Adam Courchaine from the game with three goals on its first five shots.

Meanwhile, Generals netminder Michal Neuvirth was solid at the other end, finishing with 34 saves. Tavares also added an assist.

Mitchell was given credit for the Generals' second goal after 67's defenceman Tyler Cuma picked up the pick in the corner of his own zone and attempted to stickhandle in front of his own net, only to steer a backhander past his own goaltender while under pressure from Mitchell's forecheck.

"We definitely felt the pressure, coming in down 3-0," Cuma said. "We had to pick up our game, but we didn't get the bounces the entire series. The bounces were just not going our way and the puck wasn't going in for us. There's not much we can do about it now, our season's over."

Mitchell was ejected from the contest late in the first period after he pushed Cuma into the boards from behind on a race for a loose puck. Mitchell received a five minute major for cross-checking and a game misconduct. Cuma left the game, but eventually returned in the second period.

Logan Couture, who left the game in the third period after taking a hard hit along the boards, had the lone goal for Ottawa. Chris Perugini replaced Courchaine and made 26 stops the rest of the way.

The Generals, who finished third in the Eastern Conference, now face the fourth-seeded Niagara IceDogs in the next round.
