BRAMPTON, Ont. - John Hughes' goal at 17:16 of the second period proved to be the winner as the Brampton Battalion defeated the Sarnia Sting 3-1 in Ontario Hockey league action Sunday afternoon.
Rookie forward Matt Duchene opened the scoring for Brampton (7-4-0-1) on the power play, 2:38 into the second. Positioned in the slot, he redirected a Bobby Sanguinetti feed past Tomi Karhunen.
Sarnia (6-7-0-0) cut the deficit to a goal a mere 12 seconds into the third period, as Ryan Berard slipped a shot past Bryan Pitton.
It was the only blemish on an otherwise solid afternoon for the Battalion goaltender, who turned aside 34 of 35 shots.
Sanguinetti gave Brampton some insurance with the man advantage at 11:24 of the third, firing a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle.
