NEW YORK - National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman tonight released the following statement regarding the passing of broadcasting executive Joel Nixon, who served the League from 1979-1992:
"Joel Nixon was a guiding force for our League during a time when it was growing in size and the broadcast landscape was beginning to change dramatically," Commissioner Bettman said. "Joel recognized broadcast opportunities for our League and he realized the importance of cable and subscription TV -- then in their infancy. At least as important, he loved our game, loved serving as a mentor to younger staffers and virtually always had a smile on his face. We send comfort and condolence to his family and his many friends."
