Jets looking to build momentum against Flames @NHLdotcom

JETS (20-23-5) at FLAMES (16-25-6)

Last 10: Winnipeg 4-6-0; Calgary 2-8-0

Season series: The second of three games between the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames. The Flames won, 5-4 in a shootout on Nov. 18 behind Reto Berra's 43 saves.

Big story: Winnipeg looks for its second road win in its past eight games and aims for its first winning streak of 2014. The Jets hope to build off a 5-1 victory Monday against the Phoenix Coyotes in Paul Maurice's coaching debut for the organization.

"How we come to the rink today doesn't change because we won last night," Maurice said after practice Tuesday. "We enjoy the win, we move on and we start to prepare for Calgary."

Team scope:

Jets: Goalie Ondrej Pavelec, who has started the past three games and made 19 saves Monday, said the Jets need to carry momentum from that win into the game Thursday against the Flames.

"[Maurice] wants us to work hard and be intense every shift and every time we step on the ice," Pavelec said. "We need to build that confidence. I think we lost it for a little bit after the last few games but we all know it's one game and one game doesn't make a season.

"We're in a battle. We have to do whatever we have to do to make the playoffs."

Flames: Calgary was tied with the Nashville Predators, 1-1, through two periods Tuesday but Nashville scored three third-period goals in 10 minutes in a 4-1 victory.

"In the third period, they had two good chances and they scored on them. We weren't ready coming into the third period," Flames center Mikael Backlund said. "If we want to win games, we can't let those goals in. We gotta take charge in the third period if we want to win games."

Lee Stempniak scored late in the first period for his first goal in 18 games.

"Obviously feels good to get the monkey off the back. We've been starving for goals as a team and it's nice just to contribute. It's tough with it being a loss but hopefully it's a good sign for me," Stempniak said.

Who's hot: Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien has three goals and eight points in six games. Rookie forward Eric O'Dell scored his first NHL goal Saturday and has goals in back-to-back games for the Jets. … Flames forward Jiri Hudler has four assists in three games.

Injury report: Jets forwards Jim Slater (hernia), Matt Halischuk (forearm), and defensemen Paul Postma (blood clot) and Grant Clitsome (illness) are on injured reserve. Forward Evander Kane (hand) was placed on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 7. … Flames forward Curtis Glencross (ankle), forward Blair Jones (torn meniscus) and defenseman Kris Russell (knee) are on IR. Forwards Mike Cammalleri (concussion) and David Jones (eye infection) did not play Tuesday and are questionable.
