ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Jason Jaffray had a hat trick as the Abbotsford Heat got past the Lake Erie Monsters 5-3 in American Hockey League action Saturday night.
Jaffray's second of the night, and 24th of the season, stood as the game winner as he redirected Staffan Kronwall's point shot past Lake Erie starter John Grahame late in the second.
Abbotsford led 2-1 after 20 minutes thanks to goals from Garth Murray and Kronwall. Tom Preissing was the only Monster to beat Heat starter Leland Irving.
The second period was an eventful one with the teams racking up a total of eight minor penalties.
The power-play opportunities created two of the second-period goals as the Heat entered the third up 5-2 thanks to Jaffray's hat trick. Ryan Stoa responded for Lake Erie picking up his 20th of the season.
The Monsters quickly got on the board in the third as Preissing picked his second of the night with a blast from the point just over a minute in.
The penalty filled affair had the Monsters finish 2-for-8 with the man advantage while the Heat went 2-for-9 on the power play.
Starting his second game since being recalled, Irving made 21 saves for his 13th win. Grahame made 23 saves for his 14th loss of the season.
