Janelle Foligno's new children's book is a work of heart.

The wife of Columbus Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno penned a book based on the family's experiences with their daughter, Milana, who has had two open heart surgeries.
Milana, now seven, had her first surgery to correct a leaky heart valve at just three weeks old. The Folignos were so grateful for the life-saving procedure they
made a $500,000 donation
to the Boston Children's Hospital.
Two years ago Milana, the oldest of the couple's three children, needed another surgery, this one for valve replacement. Janelle Foligno began writing a poem as an outlet and then turned the poem into a book titled, "Dear Heart: A letter to my special heart." Illustrations were done by Jenny Danko.

"Time to share my secret project... I wrote a book! Well, in truth, it started out as a poem I wrote two years ago for our daughter Milana when we found out she had to have a second open heart surgery. My way of coping with things has always been to write. My thoughts, my feelings, my ideas... I write. I may not be the best writer, but it always comes from the heart... Which is exactly how this book came to be. A big thanks to @jennydanko for bringing my poem to life with beautiful illustrations and helping make my dream for a book my heart hero can relate to, come true. I am proud to say that 100% of the proceeds from this book will be donated back to heart health research, congenital heart defect awareness as well as hospital Heart Centers and families, on behalf of The Hearts Playbook Foundation.
"This book means a lot to us as it is a reflection of the journey Milana has been through and it has a message for all heart warriors to be proud of their special hearts, of their scars, and their story. Though our daughter's story is still unfolding, we are grateful for every chapter. We hope you will read the book and enjoy it!"

"My wife, all the while, was going through, any mother would, trying to cope with having a daughter, a child with a heart defect," Nick Foligno told TSN 690 on Sunday. "She writes out of her emotions. She wrote a poem and then over time ... and realizes there's not a lot of literature for kids to kind of prepare them as they get older for what they about to face. We're really proud of it. We don't know how this is going to go, but I'm so proud that my wife has helped make this platform and hopefully we can do a lot with it."
