The New York Islanders
have agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with defenseman Calvin de Haan
, the No. 12 pick in last June's Entry Draft.
The Islanders traded up to take de Haan 11 picks after taking the defenseman's former Oshawa Generals teammate, John Tavares
, with the No. 1 pick. De Haan dressed for three preseason games and scored a goal before he was returned to Oshawa for a second season in the Ontario Hockey League. The 18-year-old played in 34 games, scoring 5 goals and 19 assists for 24 points before suffering a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
In 2008-09, his rookie season in the OHL, de Haan had 8 goals and 55 assists for 63 points in 68 games.
