Islanders to retain 2014 first-round draft pick @NHLdotcom

The New York Islanders will retain their 2014 first-round pick, the team announced Thursday. The Islanders instead will give their 2015 first-round pick to the Buffalo Sabres to complete the Thomas Vanek trade.

The Islanders had until June 1 to make the decision. They will pick fifth in the first round when the 2014 NHL Draft is held June 27-28 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

In October, the Islanders traded forward Matt Moulson, a first-round pick in 2014 or 2015, and a second-round pick in 2015 to the Sabres for Vanek. If the Islanders' pick was in the top 10 for 2014, they had the option to keep it and send the Sabres their first pick in 2015.

Vanek had 17 goals and 44 points in 47 games with the Islanders, who traded him to the Montreal Canadiens on March 5 for forward prospect Sebastian Collberg and a conditional second-round draft pick.
