Islanders Prospect Report

It was a big week for Islanders prospects around the world. In Russia, Ilya Sorokin and CSKA Moscow advanced to the second round of the KHL playoffs with a series sweep of Jokerit. In North America, Mathew Barzal had back-to-back four-point games, while Kieffer Bellows and Boston University took a share of the Hockey East title. Read more in our weekly prospect report. The top-seeded CSKA swept Jokerit 4-0 in their first-round series, with CSKA winning three consecutive games in overtime. Sorokin - the Islanders 2014 third-round pick - allowed six goals over the four games, stopping 18-of-19 in Game Two, 29-of-32 in Game Three and all 25 in the series clincher.
Sorokin finished the series with a .942 save percentage and a 1.33 goals-against average.
CSKA will likely play Lokomotiv in the second round, as Lokomotiv has a 3-1 series lead on Dinamo Minsk.

Barzal Helps Lead Thunderbirds to Playoff Berth

Mathew Barzal recorded back-to-back four-point games over the weekend, netting eight points (1G, 7A) in a pair of wins for the Seattle Thunderbirds.
After going pointless in a 7-3 loss to Tri-City on Friday, Barzal responded with a four-assist night in a 5-3 win over the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday. The Islanders' 2015 first-round pick racked up another four points on Sunday, scoring a goal and dishing out three assists in a 6-1 win over the Everett Silvertips.
The 6-1 win over Everett solidified Seattle's spot in the WHL playoffs. The Thunderbirds are 40-18-3-2 this season and are second place in the US division. They are one point behind Everett, but the Silvertips have two games in hand on the Thunderbirds.
Brazal is now tied for first in scoring on the Thunderbirds with 71 points (9G, 62A) in 37 games - nearly a two points-per-game pace. Brazal's eight-point weekend continues his ridiculous run of 33 points (2G, 31A) in his last 13 games.

BU Claims Part of Hockey East Title, Minnesota Tops Conference

Boston University defeated Notre Dame 4-1 on Saturday night to earn a share of the Hockey East regular season title. The 4-1 victory garnered BU the title for the 10th time in program history. Kieffer Bellows had a goal and an assist in the win.
The Terriers share the regular season accolade with both UMass Lowell and Boston College. BU will enter the league tournament as the No. 2 seed, while BC holds the third seed and UMass Lowell holds the first seed. BU will rest for 13 days before hosting an opponent in the Hockey East Quarterfinals, beginning March 10th. The team could face Merrimack, Northeastern, Connecticut, New Hampshire, or Maine.
Bellows closes out his freshmen regular season with seven goals and six assists. Captain - and Islanders 2012 fifth-round pick - Doyle Somerby was honored for senior day before the game. Somerby is one of three seniors this year to play all four of their seasons with head coach David Quinn - a Terrier first.
The University of Minnesota moved into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten with a 3-2 win over Wisconsin on Saturday. Islanders' 2012 seventh-round pick Jake Bischoff added an assist on the night and his 28 points (4G, 24A) lead all defensemen in the Big Ten. The assist also put him in the Top 10 in scoring this season among all NCAA defensemen.
Next week the Gophers continue on with a pair of games against Michigan. Bischoff enters that series with four goals and 24 assists.

David Quenneville Returns For Medicine Hat

David Quenneville returned to the Medicine Hat lineup on Friday, playing for the first time since breaking his leg on Jan. 3. The Islanders 2016 7th-round pick was having a career-year before his injury with 20 goals and 48 points in 38 games. Quenneville scored in his second game back from injury, upping his season totals to 21 goals and 49 points in 40 games.

Missouri Adds Defenseman, Split Weekend Results

The Missouri Mavericks signed defensemen Don Olivieri to a standard player contract on Thursday. Olivieri came to Missouri as the top goal-scoring defensemen in the Southern Professional Hockey League with 12 goals along with 19 total points.
Olivieri made his Mavericks and ECHL debut Friday night with an assist in a 4-2 victory. Missouri then lost 5-4 against the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday night, but rebounded with a 4-1 win over Tulsa on Sunday.
Overall, the Mavericks are 26-21-2-5, fifth in the Mountain Division, three points behind the Alaska Aces for the final playoff spot.
The team returns to action at home to face the Allen Americans on back to back nights starting Friday. On Sunday, Missouri takes on the Tulsa Oilers.
