Islanders Prospect Report

Stay connected to the New York Islanders prospects all season with our weekly prospect report. This week Collin Adams named USHL Player of the Week, while Mathew Barzal and Mitchell Vande Sompel have stellar weeks of their own.

Vande Sompel was named the second star of the game for London in an 11-2 win over the Niagara IceDogs on Sunday. Vande Sompel had four points in the victory, which included a power play goal and three assists. The Knights are currently first place in the Ontario Hockey League.
Vande Sompel is the top-scoring defenseman in the OHL with 19 goals and is second in points with 44. He was drafted by the Islanders in the 3rd round (78th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Collin Adams Named USHL Player of the Week:

Collin Adams scored four points (2G, 2A) in three games last week, en route to being named the USHL's Forward of the Week. Per USHL:
Adams scored a goal in Muskegon's 3-0 shutout at Team USA on Monday before adding a goal and two assists in the Lumberjacks 7-4 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers on Friday. With those four points, Adams is now second in USHL scoring with 38 points (19G, 19A). His 19 goals are second among all USHL players, while his 19 helpers are tied for the eighth-most in the league. This is Adams' second Forward of the Week honor this season, as he previously earned the award on Oct. 10, 2016.
The North Dakota commit is in his second full USHL season and has 99 points (46G, 53A) in 96 career games. A native of Brighton, MI, Adams was named to the U.S. Junior Select Team for the World Junior A Challenge and won a gold medal with Team USA. He was selected in the sixth round, 170th overall by the New York Islanders at the 2016 NHL Draft after a year in which he was named to the USHL All-Rookie first team and was second among USHL rookies in scoring. Adams was selected in the fourth round, 49th overall by Muskegon in the 2014 USHL Phase I Draft and previously played for Honeybaked (HPHL) and Little Caesars (HPHL).

Barzal Named First Star in Both Wins for Seattle

Mathew Barzal earned First Star honors in a pair of Seattle Thunderbirds' wins last week. Barzal had three goals and two assists for five points in the pair of games.
In a 3-1 win over the Everett Silvertips on Tuesday, Barzal scored the game's opening goal and assisted on the eventual game winner. Barzal, the Islanders' 2015 first-round pick, had his first multi-goal game of the season, netting two goals for the Thunderbirds in a 6-1 win over the Vancouver Giants on Friday night. Barzal also added a helper on the game's first goal to give him three points in the win.
Barzal has 28 points in18 games played for Seattle this season, including nine points in his last five outings. The Coquitlam, BC, native was also featured twice on the WHL's plays of the week.

Wotherspoon Continues to Produce from the Blueline

Parker Wotherspoon added two assists last week, as he continues to move up the ranks of the defensemen scoring leaders in the Western Hockey League. Wotherspoon currently ranks fourth in points amongst defenseman in the league, and is tied for first with 36 assists.
Wotherspoon had a pair of assists in a 7-4 win for the Tri-City Americans on Friday. The Islanders' 2015 fourth-round pick has seven goals and 36 assists this season for the Americans, who are 8-2-0-0 in their last ten games.

Missouri Records Two Wins, Begins Nine Game Homestand

Missouri Mavericks: 15-18-2-5; 6th in Mountain Division; 11th in Western Conference
The Mavericks went 2-1-0-1 in four games last week, kicking off the stretch with a 5-4 overtime win against the Allen Americans. Dane Fox, the leading scorer for Missouri, led the team with a four-point effort while Darren Nowick was credited with the game winner in overtime.
Missouri played a three-game series against the Quad City Mallards over the weekend. The Mavs lost the first meeting by a score of 5-4 in a shootout, but responded with a 5-2 win on Saturday night, led by Carter Verhaeghe's three-point outing. The Mavericks dropped the final match against the Mallards on Sunday afternoon.
Missouri will host the Cincinnati Cyclones this week for a trio of games, beginning on January 25. The Mavericks are currently in the midst of a season-high, nine-game homestand.
