Young Islanders fan gets ultimate bedroom complete with hockey rink bed

Ashleigh and Keith Campbell just wanted to make sure their son, Charlie, would be OK with his new sibling taking his old room, so they set him up with the bedroom of his dreams.

The St. James, New York, residents and New York Islanders season ticket holders built their 3-year-old a hockey-rink bed. It is adorned with hockey sticks on the wall side and has real hockey pucks as knobs for the drawers. A set of replica Islanders Stanley Cup banners hangs on the wall high above the rink bed.

Keith added another terrific touch Sunday when he turned two hockey sticks into a shelf that houses bobblehead dolls, pucks and other Islanders memorabilia.
Ashleigh is 38 weeks pregnant with the couple's second child, so Charlie needed his own room. The couple was leery of displacing Charlie without giving him a chance to adjust, so they offered him the opportunity to choose his own theme. They offered him Thomas the Tank Engine, but he chose the Islanders theme instead.
"We tried to make him all OK with the changes that were happening, and we were like 'Charlie, what kind of bed do you want?'" Ashleigh told NHL.com. "He was looking over my shoulder at my phone, and I scrolled past a bed that looked like a hockey rink, and he said 'I want a hockey rink bed."

Ashleigh, a former club hockey player at SUNY-Maritime, sourced and taped the sticks from her ex-teammates and at the Islanders practice facility, where Charlie skates. Keith did the rest. He transformed an IKEA bed into the rink, painting lines to make it look like the bench, and a scoreboard light.
"My favorite part is the hockey sticks on the bed," Ashleigh said. "[Keith] and I love Game of Thrones, so it's got that kind of Iron Throne thing going there, but I also really love it because it's sticks from three of my friends, so it's not just like random sticks that I found in the trash. It's kind of got an emotional connection to me."
The room isn't entirely complete, as they still need to buy grommets to better display other Islanders banners and towels, but they expect it to be done before Ashleigh gives birth. She is due Aug. 5.

Charlie, who got into the Islanders through his parents, has gone wild for his new room.
"As soon as we got the bed in there, he's like, 'This is my room, and the other room is the baby's room,'" Ashleigh said. "I was like, 'Good, we don't have to worry about any of that.' Mission accomplished."
