Chimera scored the Islanders lone goal, skating on a line with Stephen Gionta and Tanner Fritz, while Ladd skated on a line with PA Parenteau and Mathew Barzal. Ladd, Chimera and Travis Hamonic were all named alternate captains on Tuesday night.
"It was pretty cool to put the uniform on. It's one of those historical uniforms you always want to put on," Chimera said. "Wins and losses aren't the most important things in preseason, but you want to build. We can do some things better, but we did some good things and there's always you want to improve on."
Chimera put the Islanders ahead early, parking himself in the crease and helping Stephen Gionta's rebound over line at 1:33. The lead was short-lived, as Mika Zibanejad beat JF Berube with a one-timer on the power play at 4:55, notching the score 1-1. Chris Kreider put the Rangers ahead at the end of the period, as his wrister from the point ricocheted off an Islanders defenseman and past Berube at 18:10.
The scoreline held through most of the second period, but Brandon Pirri beat Berube with a one-timer on the power play at 17:05, putting the Rangers ahead 3-1.
Nick Leddy brought the Islanders to within one, scoring through a screen at 11:54 to make it 3-2, but Dylan McIlrath put the Isles back in a two-goal hole at shortly after. Dan Girardi iced the game with a shorthanded empty-netter at 17:47.
"The game - at times - got away from it's structure, but it's more evaluating for us," head coach Jack Capuano said. "It's watching guys and how they compete on the road and there are some things we have to take a look at."
Berube played the full 60 minutes for the Islanders, stopping 26-of-30 shots. Magnus Hellberg started the game for the Rangers, stopping 12-of-13 shots, while Mackenzie Skapski played the second half, making 17-of-18 saves.
