UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -New York Islanders defenseman Bruno Gervais injured his right ankle during the first period of Thursday night's game against the Boston Bruins and didn't return.
Gervais, playing in just his fifth game after missing seven with a sore ankle, was hurt behind the New York net 6 minutes into the opening frame after absorbing a check along the end boards from Bruins forward Petr Tenkrat.
Despite being in obvious pain, Gervais struggled to play on while the puck was free in the New York zone. He even tried to clear it before a whistle sounded.
Fellow defenseman Tom Poti helped him to the bench, and Gervais then received assistance off the ice and down the tunnel to New York's dressing room.
The Islanders ruled him out for the rest of the game and said he would be re-evaluated on Friday.
Gervais has no goals and six assists in 51 games this season, his second in the NHL.
