Islanders C Tavares sits out against Rangers @NHLdotcom

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Islanders center John Tavares is sitting out against the New York Rangers because of a concussion sustained in the season opener.

The second-year forward, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft, was injured when he collided with Dallas' Adam Burish at center ice during the first period of Saturday night's shootout loss to Dallas. He skated off the ice under his own power, but didn't return to the game.

The 20-year-old Tavares is being held out of the lineup for Monday's matinee and is expected to be re-evaluated during the day. He will need to pass baseline testing before being cleared for physical activity.

Newly acquired forward Michael Grabner is taking Tavares' place in the lineup against the Rangers.
