OWEN SOUND, Ont. - Artur Gavrus notched his first OHL hat trick and Daniel Catenacci added a goal and an assist to lead the Owen Sound Attack to a 6-3 win over the slumping Saginaw Spirit on Monday.
Gemel Smith and Matt Petgrave also scored for the Attack (5-4-0-0), while captain Mike Halmo contributed three assists.
Michael Fine, Peter Hermenegildo and Justin Kea replied for Saginaw (1-7-0-0).
Attack goaltender Jordan Binnington picked up his fourth win of the season after turning aside 34 shots, while Saginaw's Jake Paterson made 41 saves in a losing cause.
Owen Sound went 2-for-3 on the power play, while Saginaw scored once in six attempts.
Owen Sound scored early and led 4-2 after the first period.
Gavrus, a 17-year-old Belarusian centre taken 55th overall at the 2011 CHL import draft, banged home his second goal of the season just 1:26 into the game.
Catenacci, acquired in an August trade with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, made it 2-0 unassisted at 10:46. A first overall pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection, Catenacci burst out of the penalty box down the right wing and sent the puck between the legs of Paterson for his fifth goal of the campaign.
Gavrus padded the lead at 8:50, converting a bouncing rebound off a Jay Gilbert shot. It was Gilbert's seventh assist of the season.
The Spirit replied at 14:07 when Hermenegildo's low wrist shot beat a screened Binnington. Just 1:33 later, Saginaw cut the deficit to one when Fine cut in alone and roofed the puck over Binnington's blocker.
Smith used his speed on an impressive solo shorthanded effort to put Owen Sound ahead 4-2 at 17:25. Taking a pass from Halmo, Smith cut towards the goal and snapped a shot past the Saginaw goalie for his third goal of the season.
Petgrave made it 5-2 on a shot from the point at 8:08 while playing four men to three. It was his team-leading 12th point of the season.
Saginaw's Kea cut the deficit to 5-3 with 3:23 remaining in the second period.
Gavrus scored his third at 13:45 of the third period, taking a pass from defenceman Brayden Rose and snapping the puck past Paterson.
NOTES ??? Saginaw's lone win this season came at the expense of the Attack on Sept. 24 ... The Attack play in Peterborough on Thursday while Saginaw visits Sarnia Son Friday.
