Hutchinson makes 21 saves as London Knights swat Sarnia Sting 8-0 @NHLdotcom

The London Knights turned on the firepower to pass a division rival in the standings.

Michael Hutchinson made 21 saves as the London Knights thrashed the Sarnia Sting 8-0 in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday night.

The win and the Kitchener Rangers 5-3 loss to the Saginaw Spirit put the Knights in first place in the hotly contested Midwest Division.

Both teams have 53 points, but London has a game in hand to put them at the top of the standings.

Sarnia has struggled all season, going 2-7-1 in their last 10 games while occupying the West Division's cellar. The Sting's 30 points ties them with the Belleville Bulls and puts them just ahead of the Niagara IceDogs in the OHL's overall standings. Elsewhere in the OHL it was Erie 7 Guelph 5; Niagara 5 Sudbury 2; Belleville 3 Kingston 2 (OT); Plymouth 4 Windsor 3; Saginaw 5 Kitchener 3; Barrie 6 Peterborough 3; and Owen Sound 5 Ottawa 2. At Sarnia, Ont., Phil Varone led with two markers for London (26-10-1), while Jared Knight, Dominic DeSando, Justin Taylor, Leigh Salters, Jake Worrad and Seth Griffith all chipped in with goals.

Adam Courchaine stopped 28 shots for Sarnia (14-24-2).


Otters 7 Storm 5

At Erie, Pa., Zach Torquato had two goals and two assists as the Otters skated to a win over Guelph.

Derek Holden scored twice for Erie (18-15-6), while Greg McKegg, Jeremy Gottzmann and Anthony Luciani had singles.

Tyler Carroll, Mathew Sisca and Peter Holland all scored and added an assist for the Storm (14-21-3), while Ben Chiarot and Taylor Beck also tallied.


IceDogs 5 Wolves 2

At Sudbury, Ont., Andrew Shaw scored twice to lead the IceDogs past Niagara.

Andrew Fritsch and Freddie Hamilton both had a goal and an assist for Niagara (12-22-5), while Dylan MacEachern added a goal.

Marcus Foligno and Eddy Leitans-Rinke answered for the Wolves (15-19-5)


Bulls 3 Frontenacs 2 (OT)

At Belleville, Ont., Kyle DeCoste scored twice, including in overtime, as the Bulls edged Kingston.

Luke Judson had the other goal for Belleville (12-22-6).

Kaine Geldart scored both goals for Kingston (18-18-3).


Whalers 4 Spitfires 3

At Plymouth, Mich., Ryan Hayes scored twice as the Whalers upset Windsor.

Tyler Seguin added a goal and an assist for Plymouth (23-17-1), while Austin Mattson also tallied.

Justin Shugg had a pair of goals for the Spitfires (31-5-4) and Harry Young had a score of his own.


Spirit 5 Rangers 3

At Saginaw, Mich., Josh Shalla had two goals as the Spirit beat Kitchener.

Michael Sgarbossa, Ryan O'Connor and Garret Ross also scored for Saginaw (18-15-4).

Michael Catenacci, Gabriel Landeskog and Jeff Skinner had markers for the Rangers (25-10-3).


Colts 6 Petes 3

At Barrie, Ont., Kyle Clifford scored twice and added an assist as the Colts doubled Peterborough.

Bryan Cameron had a pair of goals for Barrie (31-5-1), while Darren Archibald and Alex Hutchings also had singles.

Brett Theberge, Jeff Braithwaite and Justin Larson all tallied for the Petes (20-19-2).


Attack 5 67's 2

At Owen Sound, Ont., Roman Berdnikov had two goals and two assists to lift the Attack to a victory over Ottawa.

Garrett Wilson scored and added an assist for Owen Sound (18-19-4), while Steven Shipley and Michael McGurk had markers as well.

Anthony Nigro and Peter Stevens supplied the offence for the 67's (19-16-5).
