The Carolina Hurricanes on Monday signed defenseman Jamie McBain to a two-year, $3.6 million contract.
In his second full NHL season, the 24-year-old led the team's defensemen in 2011-12 with 19 assists and 27 points. Had he not signed, he would have become a restricted free agent July 1.
"Jamie is still a very young player who has established himself as an NHL defenseman," Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford said. "He moves the puck well and has shown that he can contribute offensively, especially on the power play."
McBain, a second-round pick (No. 60) in 2006 had eight goals -- five on the power play -- and averaged 19:47 per game of ice time.
