Hurricanes sign Karlsson; Sabres sign Ullmark @NHLdotcom

The Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday signed left wing Erik Karlsson to a three-year, entry-level contract.

On the NHL level, Karlsson will be paid $550,000 in the first year, $600,000 in the second year and $650,000 in the third year. He will receive $60,000 in the American Hockey League in year one, and $65,000 in years two and three. Karlsson receives a signing bonus of $185,000.

Karlsson, 19, was a fourth-round pick (No. 99) in the 2012 NHL Draft. He helped Sweden to the silver medal at the 2014 World Junior Championship with three assists and a plus-1 rating in seven games.

"Erik played well at the World Juniors, and has shown improvement each year since he was drafted,” Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said. "He has good speed and adds to our team's organizational depth at forward."

Karlsson, spent most of the 2013-14 season with Frolunda in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), with five goals and one assist in 41 games. The Lerum, Sweden, native scored one goal in six playoff games, where the Indians lost to Linkopings in the SHL quarterfinals.

Goaltender Linus Ullmark signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabres. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Ullmark was the Sabres' sixth-round (No. 163) pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, and has been playing for the Swedish MODO hockey club at the junior and elite levels.

In 2013-14, the Lugnvik, Sweden native had a 2.08 goals-against average and .931 save percentage in 35 games for MODO in the Swedish Hockey League and was awarded the Honken Trophy as the Swedish Goaltender of the Year.

Forward Valentin Zykov signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings. Financial terms were not disclosed.

A second-round pick (No. 37) of the Kings in the 2013 NHL Draft, Zykov, 19, had 63 points (23 goals, 40 assists) and 70 penalty minutes with a plus-32 rating in 53 regular-season games for Baie-Comeau of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He helped Baie-Comeau reach the QMJHL Final with 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 22 playoff games.

In 2012-13, Zykov had 75 points (40 goals, 35 assists) in 67 regular-season games and 19 points (10 goals, nine assists) in 19 playoff games.
