Hurricanes expect Bergeron to step right in

by Kurt Dusterberg

RALEIGH N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes acquired defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday in exchange for forward Adam Hall and a seventh-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Bergeron joins his seventh NHL team and is expected to be in the Carolina lineup Tuesday against the Washington Capitals.

"We're bringing him in here for the power play," said Carolina coach Kirk Muller, whose team has an NHL-worst 12.7-percent conversion rate with the man advantage.

"Basically, he shoots the puck and he's got a cannon. He's a veteran guy and I've worked with him before."

Muller was an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens in 2009-10 when Bergeron had 13 goals and 34 points, 22 of them on the power play. Muller said he expects Bergeron to be familiar with the coach's expectations.

"We will simplify it at the beginning," Muller said. "Hockey is not football. It's not that detailed in plays. There are only certain ones you run and he will be familiar with them. It won't be perfect, but he has enough base and enough hockey sense that he should be able to jump in and be comfortable with what we ask him to do."

The Hurricanes also activated defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti from injured reserve. He had missed the past four games with an upper-body injury.

For the Capitals, defenseman John Erskine will be a game-time decision. He hasn't played since March 9 due to an upper-body injury. If he plays, it's likely he would replace Jack Hillen in the lineup.
