Hurricanes' Eric Staal does not need surgery @NHL

The Carolina Hurricanes got good news on captain Eric Staal, announcing Saturday he will not need surgery to repair a knee injury and will be ready for the start of the 2013-14 season.

In a release, the team said an MRI test showed Staal sustained a third-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee when he was involved in a knee-on-knee collision with Sweden defenseman Alexander Edler during a quarterfinal game at the 2013 IIHF World Championship.

The Hurricanes said they expect Staal's rehabilitation to last three months.

Edler was assessed a five-minute major for kneeing and a game-misconduct, and the IIHF suspended him for the remainder of the tournament.
