Jeff Skinner scored the only goal of the shootout to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 preseason win against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.

Justin Bailey scored a shorthanded goal for Buffalo to tie the game in the third period. Evander Kane also scored for the Sabres.

Buffalo forward Ryan O'Reilly left the game with a lower-body injury. It was his first preseason game since playing for Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey 2016. Coach Dan Bylsma said O'Reilly was held out as a precaution after he tweaked a muscle in the first period.

Roland McKeown and Elias Lindholm scored to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead.

The game was played at Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
