RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Andrew Ladd scored in the ninth round of the shootout and Cam Ward stopped Columbus cold to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 2-1 preseason victory over the Blue Jackets on Friday night.
Ward finished with 41 saves, then stopped each of the Blue Jackets' nine attempts in the shootout. Seconds after Ward poked the puck from Sheldon Brookbank, Ladd ended it when he skated in hard on Pascal Leclaire and then beat him with a wrist shot to his stick side.
Erik Cole forced overtime by scoring late in the third period for Carolina, which wrapped up its preseason by sweeping a home-and-home from Columbus.
Curtis Glencross scored and Leclaire stopped 20 shots for Columbus, which failed to capitalize on a 42-21 advantage in shots and dropped its third straight.
It was a testy game throughout with at least six fights during the first two periods. The second period was stopped and intermission was called with 22.6 seconds left - after a particularly nasty incident in which there were four separate fights - to allow both teams to cool their tempers.
Columbus took a 1-0 lead on a power play late in the second period, when Glencross tipped a blast from Sergei Federov past Ward for his second goal of the preseason. Cole tied it with 3:51 left in regulation when he redirected Mike Commodore's blast from behind the right circle past Leclaire.
The Blue Jackets were without several big names - most notably, their big offseason acquisition, center Michael Peca, and their three leading scorers from last season: David Vyborny, Rick Nash and Fredrik Modin. Carolina, which earlier in the day finalized its roster, sat defenseman Frantisek Kaberle and right wing Trevor Letowski.
The Hurricanes start the regular season Wednesday at home against Montreal. Columbus concludes its preseason schedule Saturday at Nashville before opening at home against Stanley Cup champion Anaheim.
