Humboldt scores with 1.1 seconds left to beat Victoria 2-1 in RBC opener

VICTORIA, B.C. - Scott Schroeder scored a shorthanded goal with 1.1 seconds left in the third period as the defending-champion Humboldt Broncos beat the Victoria Grizzlies 2-1 on Saturday in the opening game of the 2009 RBC Cup.

With Victoria enjoying a late man advantage, Schroeder took advantage of a miscue in the neutral zone. He picked up a loose puck before moving in on Grizzlies netminder Anthony Grieco for the game-winner.

Humbolt won the 2008 national Junior A championship played in Cornwall, Ont.

The Broncos trailed the tournament hosts 1-0 entering the third period before rallying for the unlikely win.

Spencer Braaten got Humboldt on the board 1:48 into the third, poking a loose puck past Grieco to tie the game 1-1.

Brian Nugent had Victoria's only goal, opening the scoring late in the second period on a long 5-on-3 power play.

The Victoria captain took the puck at the face-off dot and rifled a shot over the shoulder of Humboldt goaltender Mathieu LaRochelle for a 1-0 lead.

LaRochelle and Grieco each made 33 saves.

The Broncos have the day off Sunday, while the Grizzlies face the Kingston Voyageurs.
