The first road trip of the 2020-21 season has arrived for the Predators, and the defending Western Conference Champions will be waiting on the other side of the ice.
Nashville traveled to Dallas on Thursday to face the Stars twice over the next three nights, and the first meeting comes this evening at American Airlines Center. It's the first of eight contests between the two division rivals over the next four months with Dallas remaining in the new-look Central this season.
Tonight's matchup has turned into the season-opener for the Stars after the start of their campaign was delayed due to a COVID-19 outbreak throughout the team during training camp. The Stars are sure to have some added jump due to the postponement of the first three games of their original schedule, and the Predators know they'll have to be ready to go from the start.

Nashville has dealt with their own obstacle this week; after facing the Hurricanes on Monday night at Bridgestone Arena, the second half of the back-to-back, which was supposed to take place on Tuesday, was postponed after Carolina encountered COVID issues of their own. After two unexpected days of consecutive practices, the Preds are prepared to try for their third win in four games this season.
"I liked the focus level of our group the last couple of games, and then, particularly the last two practices," Preds Head Coach John Hynes said. "We've moved on from the Carolina situation, and now it's all about Dallas. Obviously, they haven't played a game yet, but they've had a training camp, you look at their team and they're well coached, they have really good players and it's going to be a challenge. Dallas is a really good team; it's going to be a good test for us and that's all that we're focused on. But as far as our group, we've put the work in, I think we're mentally and physically ready to play and now it's an opportunity to go compete."

Coach Hynes on Mikael Granlund's status

Mikael Granlund practiced with the Predators on Thursday for the first time this season as he returns from COVID protocols.
Prior to Thursday's practice, the Predators added forward Philip Tomasino and Michael McCarron, as well as defenseman Ben Harpur to their taxi squad. Those three join forwards Eeli Tolvanen and Mathieu Olivier, plus goaltender Connor Ingram, on the taxi squad.
Preds General Manager David Poile addressed those moves and more during a press conference on Thursday
.
Update: Preds Head Coach John Hynes has confirmed Granlund will make his season debut tonight in Dallas alongside Matt Duchene and Luke Kunin. Hynes also added forward Rocco Grimaldi will come out of the lineup tonight, and forward Calle Jarnkrok is day-to-day.

The Good Guys:
Prior to the postponement of Tuesday's game against Carolina, the Predators endured their first loss of the season with a 4-2 result against the Hurricanes on Monday. Filip Forsberg extended his goal streak to three games to start the season, and Viktor Arvidsson scored Nashville's first power-play goal of 2021. Goaltender Pekka Rinne made 20 saves in his first start of the season.
Forsberg and Arvidsson lead the team in scoring with three points apiece, followed by Luke Kunin, Brad Richardson, Rocco Grimaldi, Matt Duchene and Dante Fabbro with two points each. A total of 16 Predators skaters have registered at least one point though the team's first three games.
Goaltender Juuse Saros has earned both of Nashville's wins this season and owns a 1.50 goals-against average and a .959 save percentage.

The Opposition:
The Stars will be without Tyler Seguin, their leading scorer last season, due to offseason hip surgery. Goaltender Ben Bishop and defenseman Stephen Johns will also be unavailable for Dallas.
Stars Captain Jamie Benn had 19 goals and 39 points last season, followed by Miro Heiskanen (8g-27a) with 35 points and Alexander Radulov (15g-19a) with 34. All-Time Meetings:
The Predators are 40-42-(1)-5 all-time against the Stars, including a 14-26-(0)-3 record on the road.
Last season, Nashville and Dallas split their four-game regular-season series, with the Predators prevailing in their final two meetings. Nashville shut out Dallas in both of its wins (March 5 and 7, 2020), marking the first time in team history it has shut out an opponent in both games of a home-and-home set. Per NHL PR, Nashville became the 11th team in the last 45 years to accomplish the feat.
Nashville and Dallas met in the 2020 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day, with the Preds falling 4-2 in front of 85,630 fans - the second-most attended NHL game in history. Matt Duchene and Dante Fabbro scored for the Predators.
