GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Krys Kolanos scored three goals and added an assist in his Abbotsford debut as the Heat downed the Grand Rapids Griffins 5-1 in American Hockey League action Friday.
Kolanos had not played a professional game since January 2010, after major hip surgery put him on a long road back to recovery. The 30-year-old finished the game with seven shots and a plus-2 rating as the Heat evened their record to 1-1-0 on their current road trip through Ontario and Michigan.
Ben Walter had three assists for the Heat (5-3-0), Jon Rheault added a goal and an assist, and Clay Wilson also scored.
Guillaume Desbiens added two assists.
Chris Conner scored 53 seconds into the game for Grand Rapids (3-5-0), but that was all the offence the Griffins could muster.
Abbotsford was 3-for-6 on the power play, while Grand Rapids was 0-for-4. Abbotsford has a penalty-killing efficiency of 92.1 per cent so far this season.
Heat starting goaltender Leland Irving and Griffins counterpart Joey MacDonald were ejected for fighting late in the second period.
Irving stopped 12 of 13 shots he faced for the Heat, before Joni Ortio stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief.
MacDonald stopped 17 of 19 shots before getting tossed. Backup Jordan Pearce stopped nine of 11 shots.
