VICTORIA, B.C. - Jeff Forsythe had two goals and an assist and the host Victoria Grizzlies rebounded from a tough opening loss with a resounding 5-0 victory over the Kingston Voyageurs in Sunday's action at the RBC Cup.
Victoria opened this year's national tier II Junior A championship with a 2-1 loss to the defending champion Humboldt Broncos on Saturday. Humboldt scored a short-handed goal with 1.1 seconds left in the third period.
The Grizzlies got over that loss pretty quick. Jonathan Milhouse, Brian Nugent and Evan Pighin also scored in Sunday's game, and Anthony Grieco stopped all 21 shots he saw for Victoria (1-1).
Shawn Sirman stopped 35 shots for the Ontario-based Voyageurs (0-1).
Earlier Sunday, Braden Pimm scored just 13 seconds after the opening faceoff to spark B.C.'s Vernon Vipers to a 4-2 win over P.E.I.'s Summerside Western Capitals.
With the starting lineup barely announced and most fans not yet in their seats, Pimm snapped a shot past Summerside goaltender Alex Dupuis to give his team the very early lead.
Connor and Kellen Jones combined for a short-handed goal just 6:27 later for a 2-0 advantage as Vernon opened its quest for a record fifth Junior A title. Connor Jones added his second goal in the second period and Mike Collins also scored for the Vipers, who led 4-0 after 40 minutes.
Nathan DesRoches and Josh McKinnon scored third-period goals for Summerside, ending the shutout bid of Vipers netminder Andrew Hammond and cutting the Vernon lead in half.
Hammond made 19 saves for the win, while at the other end Dupuis stopped 34 shots.
In Monday's action, Kingston plays Summerside while Saskatchewan-based Humboldt takes on Vernon.
