VICTORIA, B.C. - Justin Courtnall scored twice and added an assist as the host Victoria Grizzlies earned a semifinal berth at the 2009 RBC Cup with a 6-3 win over the Summerside Western Capitals on Wednesday.
The Grizzlies finished the round-robin portion of the national Junior A hockey championship with a 2-2 record. The loss means the Capitals - the only winless team at 0-3 - cannot make the semifinals, regardless of the outcome of their final round-robin game on Thursday.
Earlier Wednesday, the defending champion Humboldt Broncos beat the Kingston Voyageurs 5-2. The two teams will join the Grizzlies and the undefeated Vernon Vipers in the semifinals.
Brian Nugent, Dustin Mowrey, Jonathan Milhouse and Evan Pighin also scored for Victoria.
Steven Brazil scored twice and Jason Gallant added a goal for Summerside, the Eastern Region champions from Prince Edward Island.
Earlier Wednesday, Shawn Hunter set up Scott Schroeder for the insurance goal early in the third period and rounded out the scoring into an empty net in the final minute as the Broncos beat Kingston.
Voyageurs netminder Shawn Sirman continued his strong play early in Wednesday's game, keeping the game scoreless after one period despite his team being outshot 18-9. Sirman made 45 saves in a 7-5 Kingston win over Summerside on Monday.
Jarrett Burton and Mike Farrell scored goals 4:56 apart in the second period to give Kingston a pair of leads at 1-0 and 2-1, but otherwise the Central Region champions couldn't beat Humboldt goaltender Andrew Bodnarchuk.
Taylor Piller, Dimitri Levin and Tory Allen scored second-period goals for the Saskatchewan-based Broncos as they took a slim 3-2 lead into the final 20 minutes before pulling away.
Round-robin play ends Thursday, with seeding for the semifinals at stake. Kingston faces Vernon while Humboldt takes on Summerside.
