REGINA - Riley Holzapfel had two goals and an assist to help the Moose Jaw Warriors (9-3-3-1) hand the Regina Pats (12-7-0-0) just their third home loss of the season 5-2 in Western Hockey League action Friday night.
Regina's Logan Pyett opened the scoring at 9:15 of the first with his ninth goal of the season. Winding up from behind his net, the defenceman rushed the length of the ice, ripped a shot off Moose Jaw goalie Joey Perricone's mask, then picked up his own rebound and banked it in off the crowd in front.
Regina was able to take their 1-0 lead into the second period, only to get in penalty trouble halfway in and give up two quick power-play goals to Moose Jaw, both by team captain Riley Holzapfel.
Holzapfel's first was set up by Travis Hamonic at the 8:02 mark and his second, two minutes later, was assisted on by Brady Calla. The two goals were Holzapfel's third and fourth on the season.
Moose Jaw's Jason Bast then got in on the scoring with goals at 17:32 of the second and another at 6:31 of the third. Tomnas Karpov set up Bast's first strike and Holzapfel and Jordan Knackstedt worked the boards to set up the second, a wrist shot Bast rifled over Regina goalie Linden Rowat's shoulder to put Moose Jaw up 4-0. Bast's two goals give him a total of eight on the year.
Regina responded two minutes later with a power-play goal at 8:37 from Michael MacAngus to cut the lead to 4-2.
But another Regina penalty lead to another Moose Jaw power play, allowing Joel Broda to seal the deal with a goal at 17:16 to give the Warriors a 5-2 win.
Moose Jaw goalie Joey Perricone faced 39 shots to record the win while Rowat faced 30 for the loss.
