SPOKANE, Wash. - Mitch Holmberg scored the winning goal in the third period and the Spokane Chiefs beat Everett 3-2 Sunday and spoiled the Silvertips' chance to finish first in the Western Hockey League's Western Conference.
U.S. Division rivals Everett and Tri-City both finished with 97 points, but the Americans had one more win and took top spot in the West.
As a result, the Silvertips finish third and will face the Kelowna Rockets in the first round of the playoffs.
The Chiefs finished fourth and will host the Portland Winterhawks in the first round.
Tyler Johnson and Jared Spurgeon also scored for Spokane (45-22-5), while James Reid made 19 saves.
Kellan Tochkin and Tyler Maxwell replied for Everett (46-21-5), while Thomas Heemskerk stopped 23 shots.
