PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Justin Hodgman scored twice and added an assist as the Erie Otters held on for a 6-4 win over the Plymouth Whalers in Ontario Hockey League action Saturday night.
The loss spoiled the Whalers' home opener - which included the raising of their 2006-07 OHL championship banner - but it was their own penalty problems that cost them. Erie netted three power-play goals and added another just as a two-minute two-man power play ended.
The Otters jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the third before the Whalers drew within a goal at 14:36 on AJ Jenks' power-play marker.
Hodgman iced the win with a short-handed marker with 1:09 remaining.
Jordan Skellett and Luke Gazdic each had a goal and an assist for Erie with Anthony Peluso and Zack Torquato adding singles. Overage goalie Justin Garay, a former Whaler, earned the victory making 38 saves.
Joe McCann paced Plymouth with a pair of goals, while Chris Terry scored on a third-period penalty shot. Netminder Jeremy Smith stopped 30 shots in the loss.
