Hitmen open WHL playoff series with 5-0 rout of Oil Kings @NHLdotcom

CALGARY - Joel Broda scored twice and added an assist to lead the Calgary Hitmen to a 5-0 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings in the lone Western Hockey League playoff game on Thursday night.

Calgary goalie Martin Jones stopped all 21 shots he faced as the Hitmen took a 1-0 lead in their opening-round best-of-seven series.

The Hitmen finished the regular season with a 59-9-3-1 record, best in the WHL, while the Oil Kings (29-34-4-5) needed overtime to beat the Prince Albert Raiders 2-1 on Tuesday night in a tie-breaking game to lock down the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Ian Schultz, Kris Foucault and Brandon Kozun also scored for the Hitmen, who will host Game 2 of the series on Sunday afternoon at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Edmonton goalie Torrie Jung stopped 32 of 37 in a losing cause.
