Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele is keeping a diary of his experiences at the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg. The Jets face the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday (3 p.m. ET; NHLN, SN, TVA Sports2, NHL.TV) in the 19th outdoor regular-season NHL game and the first of four this season
In his second entry, Scheifele talks about the Jets' family skate at IGF on Friday and the buildup to the game on Sunday.
WINNIPEG -- We had our family skate today at the stadium today and I went with my mom, Mary Lou. Investors Group Field is beautiful. Everything is done up to the nines, all the signage, and they're turning that Blue Bombers stadium basically into a Winnipeg Jets stadium and it's pretty sweet.
Then being on the ice and seeing what it looks like, maybe being a football player and playing on a field like that, it was really sweet to skate on it. She loved it too. She hasn't been on skates for a while so she took a few breaks. We were probably out there for a good half-hour and she loved every second of it.
On the way over there today, I had a tough time getting to the right place to park. Me and Matty Perreault basically drove around the entire stadium trying to find where we were supposed to go to park. He was supposed to be following me, and I didn't know where I was going, and I said then I thought I knew, but then we probably ended up driving an extra 10 minutes around the whole place trying to find the right place. But once we got there and onto the ice, a lot of the guys were there and a lot of their families and a lot of friends. It was a good time, a lot of fun.
One thing I've noticed around town about what's going on is buzz. It's out there. Every person I see that recognizes me has said, "Hey, good luck on Sunday, can't wait to watch it and it's going to be an unbelievable thing." That's probably happened to me a few times every day over the last week. You can tell there's a lot of buzz around, and every time I look on Twitter, something that's trending is the Heritage Classic. There is buzz, social media-wise. It's going to be fun. I've talked to some of the guys on Edmonton and they're pretty pumped for it as well. It will be a good time.
