VANCOUVER - James Henry scored in regulation and the only goal in a shootout Sunday night to lead the Vancouver Giants over the Prince George Cougars 4-3 in Western Hockey League action.
The Winnipeg native also picked up an assist as Vancouver improved to 13-8-1 while Prince George dropped to 6-13-2.
Each team had a chance to open the scoring with breakaway opportunities within a minute of each other midway through the first.
Jordan Tkatch found himself in alone on Adam Morrison but the Giants starter denied the winger.
Just over 30 seconds later Levi Bews responded with a 1-on-1 opportunity the other way, but Devon Fordyce made himself big to keep the game scoreless.
The Giants broke the deadlock at 13:37 of the first as Henry found Marek Tvrdon in the slot and the Detroit Red Wings prospect roofed the puck into the top right corner for his 11th goal of the season.
Tkatch redeemed himself for his first-period miss by converting a short-handed breakaway to bring his team level at 17:12 of the second with a shot into the top right corner.
The Cougars began the third period on the power play and jumped in to a 2-1. Alex Forsberg sent the puck across the crease for Spencer Asuchak who tapped in the puck just 57 second in.
Prince George solidified their lead through a strange play at 2:07, as Chase Witala claimed his first of the season. The left-winger flipped a shot toward Morrison from the sideboards and the goaltender seemed to lose track of the puck, as it dropped in right over him to put the Cougars up 3-1.
Henry had an answer on the power play for the Giants, scoring his fifth of the season at 11:48. The Giants??? captain finished a nice passing play set up by David Musil and Brendan Gallagher.
The Giants completed their comeback as Brendan Gallagher scored his 18th of the season with just over a minute left to play to force overtime.
Henry scored the game-winning goal with the Giants??? second shot in the penalty shootout.
