Hawks like home cooking

by John Kreiser
The Blackhawks earned 62 points at the United Center last season and had 26 more power plays at home than the opposition.

Advantage Margin: +29
Most of the Hawks' extra advantages came at home -- they had 26 more power plays than the opposition at the United Center, just three more on the road.

Special Teams Goal Margin: +22
Credit most of this to the penalty-killers, who allowed just 39 goals (only 14 at home) and led the League with 13 shorthanded goals. The power play was 29th at home at 13.9 percent, but fourth on the road at 22.1 percent.

Goals by defensemen: 35
Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith (14) accounted for 40 percent of this total. The Hawks hope Brian Campbell (7) will provide more scoring this season.

Overtime Record
Total: 15-2-6
OT: 6-2 SO: 9-6
The Hawks figure to miss goalie Antti Niemi, whose superb rookie season included a 6-2 record and .812 save percentage (1.000 in 10 attempts at home) in shootouts. Jonathan Toews tied for the League lead with eight shootout goals.
Times Scored First: 56 Record: 40-9-7
No other team was better than the Hawks at getting the jump on the opposition, and their 40 wins when scoring first was also tops in the NHL.

Best 09-10 Number: 9
Average margin by which the Blackhawks outshot their opponents during the 82-game regular season. The Hawks led the NHL with an average of 34.1 shots per game and were also tops with an average of 25.1 shots against.

Worst 09-10 Number: .900
Chicago's regular-season save percentage. The Hawks had the fifth-best goals-against average, but only the League's two weakest teams, Toronto and Edmonton, had lower save percentages (six others tied Chicago at .900).
The Hawks will raise their first Stanley Cup banner in 49 years in their home opener against Detroit on Oct. 9 and play eight of their first 12 games at the United Center. They have their usual long trips in late November and early February (six games each), but play eight of 11 December games and seven of 11 in January at home.
