Hackett stops 22 to win fifth straight as Plymouth downs the Greyhounds 3-1 @NHL

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Matt Hackett made 22 saves to lead the Plymouth Whalers past the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, 3-1 on Saturday night in Ontario Hockey League action.

Hackett, not Nashville prospect Jeremy Smith, has been the hot hand for Plymouth lately, winning his last five starts.

Vern Cooper's power-play goal at 17:11 of the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Whalers improved to 6-2-1-0 since Mike Vellucci replaced Greg Stefan as head coach.

Kaine Geldart and Patrick Lee added shorthanded goals for Plymouth (12-13-3-0).

The Greyhounds' lone goal, also shorthanded, came from Anthony Peluso to tie the game midway through the second period.

Bryce O'Hagan stopped 43 shots for Sault Ste. Marie (13-14-1-1).
