BRAMPTON, Ont. - Evgeni Grachev scored twice and added a pair of assists in his Ontario Hockey League playoff debut to lead the Brampton Battalion to a 5-2 victory over the Peterborough Petes in the first game of their Eastern Conference quarter-final series.
Matt Duchene also scored a pair of goals for the Battalion, with Anthony Peluso adding a single. Cody Hodgson contributed four assists.
"We knew Peterborough was going to come hard at us so we just made sure to play our game," said Grachev. "We struggled a little bit in the second period but were able to put them away in the third."
Brampton dominated the first period, outshooting the Petes 22-4 and finding the net three times, each goal coming on the power play. Peterborough found themselves unable to keep their discipline in check, taking ten minor penalties in the opening frame.
Things went a little bit differently in the second, with Peterborough dominating the shots category by a count of 18-4 and pulling within two goals thanks to a shorthanded goal from Zach Harnden.
Grachev put the game out of reach with his pair of tallies in the third period. Sergey Korostin brought the Petes to within three with 1:18 remaining in regulation but it was too little, too late.
Jason Missiaen stopped 34 of 39 shots for Peterborough while Brampton netminder Thomas McCollum made 25 saves in the Battalion net.
