Gonchar, Malone injured during Game 5's 2nd period @NHLdotcom

DETROIT (AP) -Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar was not on the ice during the first two overtime periods of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night.

Gonchar lost his balance and fell headfirst into the end boards while chasing a 2-on-1 Red Wings breakout in the second period. The veteran defenseman was helped up by trainers and taken to the locker room.

Not long after, Penguins left wing Ryan Malone was struck in the face by a slap shot by Hal Gill. He rushed off the ice with blood dripping into a towel.

Both returned for the third period, but Gonchar was not on the ice during the overtimes.
