Pittsburgh defenseman Sergei Gonchar left Game 4 of the Penguins' series against Washington late in the opening period Friday night after a knee-on-knee hit by the Caps' Alex Ovechkin.

The Penguins announced that Gonchar's return was questionable.

With Washington on a power play, Ovechkin raced behind the net and caught Gonchar with his right knee. The hit sent Gonchar spinning into the air before he landed on the ice; he was quickly on his hands and knees, in obvious pain.

Ovechkin received a tripping penalty at 14:55; Gonchar, who scored the Penguins' first goal 3:55 into the game, was helped off the ice.
