MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - Jared Gomes scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors a 2-1 victory over the Saginaw Spirit Sunday afternoon in the Ontario Hockey League.
Gomes, who has provided the Majors with the bulk of their offence in the last week, beat Saginaw goaltender Anthony Peters with a low shot from close range to lift the Majors (28-22-1-2) to their second win in a row.
"There's not a lot of hockey left this season and I'm just trying to compete as hard as I can right now," said Gomes, who has scored five goals and added seven assists in his last four games.
The 20-year-old native of Brampton, Ont., set up defenceman Blake Parlett for Mississauga's only goal in regulation time. Parlett's fifth goal of the season tied the game 1-1 early in the second period.
Defenceman Nick Crawford gave the Spirit (30-18-0-4) a 1-0 lead when he scored his fifth goal of the season during a Saginaw power play in the first period.
The Majors fired 39 shots at Peters. Mississauga goalie Chris Carrozzi made 28 saves and turned back all three Saginaw attempts in the shootout.
