Pietrangelo, Nurse suspended for Game 5 between Golden Knights, Oilers

Alex Pietrangelo of the Vegas Golden Knights and Darnell Nurse of the Edmonton Oilers each was suspended one game by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Thursday and did not play in Game 5 of the Western Conference Second Round at T-Mobile Arena on Friday.

Pietrangelo was disciplined for slashing Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl late in a 4-1 loss in Game 4 at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Wednesday. The best-of-7 series is tied 2-2.

The incident occurred in the right face-off circle in Vegas' zone at 18:29 of the third period. Draisaitl had missed on his shot at an empty net and was following the play when he was slashed on the hands by Pietrangelo.

"I mean, it's as intent to injure as you can get," Oilers captain Connor McDavid said after Game 4. "Time, score, clock all play a factor. He comes from over his own head and places it just kind of under Leon's chin. You'd like to see something like that suspended. It's not a hockey play."

Pietrangelo was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct on the play. Draisaitl got up under his own power but did not take another shift.

Draisaitl, who had an assist in the win, entered Friday leading the Stanley Cup Playoffs in goals (13) and was tied for first in points (18) in 10 games.

"That's a really, really, dangerous slash, you know?" Draisaitl said Thursday. "I think those are things that have nothing to do with hockey or the game. You can seriously, seriously injure someone with a slash like that."

Pietrangelo has six assists in nine games and leads the Golden Knights in average ice time per game (24:37) this postseason.

Nurse received a two-minute instigator penalty, five-minute fighting major and a 10-minute misconduct against Golden Knights defenseman Nicolas Hague with 50 seconds remaining in Game 4.

"For me, you play 24 minutes a night, you don't want to take yourself out of the game at the wrong time," Nurse said Thursday. "With 30 seconds left in a 4-1 game, I think to do it a fair way to have a fair fight where both people want to fight and are willing to engage, I think that's what took place last night."

In addition, Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft was fined $10,000.

The suspension to the player and the fine of the coach are automatic for a violation of Rule 46.21.

Nurse has four assists in 10 playoff games and entered Friday second on the Oilers in ice time per game (23:24), behind McDavid (23:33).
